Hi there all you gorgeous brides to be! I'm a Scottish wedding photographer with over ten years of experience capturing all the beautiful moments on one of the most special days in a couple's lifetime. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of couples and in that time I’ve seen it all. From perfectly planned mornings to those last minute scrambles.

If I were a bride, I can tell you with certainty that this one piece of advice would be at the top of my list: be ready in your dress 45 minutes before your ceremony. I’ve seen firsthand how much timing affects the flow of the morning and how it can ripple throughout the rest of the day. More importantly, it directly impacts the bride’s experience. That extra time not only creates space for stunning photos, but it also sets the tone for a calm and enjoyable start to your day.

In this post, I want to share why getting ready early is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and how it will transform your wedding photos and your overall experience.

Why Being Ready 45 Minutes Before Your Ceremony is the Secret to Wedding Photo Magic

You’ve spent months, maybe even years, dreaming about your wedding day. Every detail, every moment, every photo. And when the day finally arrives there’s one small decision that can make a huge impact: Be ready in your dress at least 45 minutes before your ceremony.

I can’t stress this enough! As a photographer who’s been behind the scenes at countless weddings, I’ve seen how that final hour before the ceremony can either feel calm and dreamy… or chaotic and rushed. And you know what? 99% of the time it all comes down to timing. I’m going to take a wild guess here: you want your morning to feel calm and dreamy? I'm glad we're on the same boat!

THE BENEFITS?

This window gives us the space to create something truly special. No clock watching. No stress. Just a relaxed, beautiful vibe where you feel fully present. It’s time to:

• Take a deep breath and soak it all in

• Let your makeup artist and hair stylist do last-minute touch-ups

• Capture timeless bridal portraits

• Share emotional moments with your family members or bridesmaids

• Photograph the small preparation details in a way that feels intentional, not rushed

When you’re still getting zipped up just minutes before walking down the aisle, we lose all those beautiful opportunities. And most importantly, you will seriously feel that pressure. That tension can show in your photos.

Top tip: Make sure you’re not last for hair or makeup.

While your bridesmaids are still having their turn getting glammed, it’s the perfect time for us to capture all the lovely little moments with just you. Portraits of you in your PJs, putting on your jewellery, spritzing your perfume and enjoying those calm moments before the excitement of the day begins. These are some of the most personal parts of the morning. When your hair and makeup is finished early you have the freedom to ease into your dress without any pressure or rush. Once the last bridesmaid is finished with hair and makeup, we can take those group PJ photos and get you into your dress ready to start capturing the real magic of the day!

When things are rushed, that’s when mistakes happen. Necklaces can get clasped wrong, buttons might be missed, straps twisted, petticoats sitting funny or veils not secured properly. Those little things can bug you all day long. Giving yourself time means everything is done right and you step into your ceremony feeling confident, polished and totally present.

CALM ENERGY = BEAUTIFUL IMAGERY

Some of the most magical bridal portraits I’ve taken were during those quiet, unhurried moments before the ceremony. The light is soft, emotions are high (in the best way) and there's this gorgeous anticipation in the air. That’s where the magic happens.

YOU Don't Rush the First Looks

The first looks are an incredibly emotional and special moment, one that you'll cherish for years to come. Whether it's with your parents, bridesmaids, siblings or someone else who's been a significant part of your life, this moment deserves your full attention. There’s nothing worse than feeling rushed through this moment as if it’s just another task to check off the list. This is your time to truly embrace the emotions, to take in the joy and excitement of seeing each other in such an important moment. Give yourself the space to let it unfold naturally. Take a deep breath, savour it and allow yourself to really feel it. The photos will reflect the raw emotions and beauty of this moment when you’ve allowed yourself to fully experience it.

MANAGE TIME, PROTECT THE DREAM

You’ve spent so much time imagining this day. So protect that vision. Build that extra buffer into your timeline. It’s such a simple adjustment but it makes all the difference. Because when you feel calm, confident and radiant your photos will reflect that.

So here’s my gentle nudge to all future brides. If you want photos like my gorgeous bride Zoe on this blog post you NEED to plan to be in your dress 45 minutes before your ceremony and don’t leave your hair and makeup until last. You won’t regret it. In fact, you’ll probably thank yourself for it when you’re looking through your photos years from now, reliving the magic.
